Two methods of construction of printed circuit boards are compared: standard one, using FR-4 laminate, and novel one with material on a metal substrate (IMS), dedicated to high-current circuits. The method of modeling of PCB circuits based on finite element method (FEM) is also proposed. The presented thermal model correctly represents PCB circuit. Difference between calculated and measured temperature is less than 4 %. Thermal model makes it possible to calculate temperature distribution in the PCB and enables significant increase in the power density of PCB by optimizing the arrangement of elements and use of IMS material.
