20 years have passed since the team of the then Nicolaus Copernicus University Department of Hydrology and Water Management in Torun started research on the lower Vistula icing. During this time, nearly 90 cross-sections of the lower Vistula were probed on the length of over 370 km. Their main goal was to determine the level of the riverbed filling with ice, as well as its structure and the related jam risk. Depending on the icing course during the winter and depending on the analyzed section, the fill level ranged between 10% and over 80%. The article discusses the variability of this parameter in different river sections, characterizes the associated fill structure and the thickness of the ice cover. It also describes selected, most dangerous jam situations and conditions that led to their occurrence.
