Water, which appears in the area of the construction of the railway or road embankment has a significant impact on condition of structure, especially on its stability. The article presents a natural causes of water presence in the vicinity of soil structure. There is also explained presence of water caused by human activities. Author indicated the main causes of emergence the flood plain in areas of mining and presented key issues related to the design of soil structures. The main aim of the study was to analyze the numerical models of railway embankment in several different variants. Author used the computer program Z_Soil for investigation. There were carried out numerical analysis of railway embankment, which geometry and geotechnical parameters were consistent with project. The embankment is not stable, for this reason there was proposed the replacement the soil for better one. Numerical analysis confirmed that the embankment after exchanging soil is stable, but when there is an additional water load it stopped to be. Additionally, there was carried out numerical analysis of the embankments which are made of materials of different permeability (different permeability coefficient) has been carried. In both cases the embankment is not stable. Next, author performed the minimum valuesof module, which make the embankments stable. Based on the numerical analysis assessed the impact of soil permeability on the stability of the railway embankment. Embankments which are built with more permeable soil work better, existing vertical displacements and stresses are lower, the structures are more resistant to water load.
