The article presents groundwater quality studies in wielkopolska province based on physico-chemical and microbiological analyses of water from 11 shallow dug wells. Studies have shown that the water in the area is contaminated. The main parameters that do not meet the requirements of drinking water are hardness, organoleptic properties, microbiological composition, heavy metal content and nitrite concentrations. Water contamination is most likely caused by surface run-off from fields, leaky septic tanks and poor surface water quality. The presented issue concerns not only the area in question, but all small towns in Poland of a similar nature. In order to improve groundwater quality in Poland, it is necessary to increase public awareness of water resources and the real impact of each person on the quality of this important raw material.
