Zmiany klimatu są faktem, a polskie miasta i gminy stają przed koniecznością przystosowania się do nich. Coraz najbardziej narażone na ekstremalne zjawiska, takie jak huraganowe wiatry, susze czy intensywne opady, muszą wprowadzić rozwiązania, które podniosą ich odporność na takie zjawiska. Rozwiązania te powinny być elementem szerszych strategii adaptacyjnych, obejmujących dokładną analizę lokalnej sytuacji, potencjalnych zagrożeń, prawdopodobieństwa ich wystąpienia oraz możliwego oddziaływania na gminę. W ramach projektu Ministerstwa Środowiska Plany adaptacji do zmian klimatu opracowywane są dla 44 miast powyżej 100 tys. mieszkańców. Warto, by w ich ślady poszły kolejne, planując własne działania adaptacyjne. Możliwych narzędzi adaptacji jest wiele. Należą do nich np. modernizacja budynków i infrastruktury w celu poprawy odporności, lepsze zarządzanie wodą w mieście (zachowanie i rozwój małej retencji, ograniczenie uszczelniania powierzchni, rozwój i modernizacja systemu odprowadzania i wykorzystania wód odpadowych), tworzenie korytarzy wentylacyjnych, wprowadzenie systemu ostrzegania o zagrożeniach pogodowych czy akcje edukacyjne. Ważnym komponentem jest też rozwój tzw. zielonej infrastruktury, pod którym to pojęciem rozumiemy sieć obszarów naturalnych i półnaturalnych, zaprojektowaną i zarządzaną w sposób zapewniający szeroką gamę usług ekosystemowych, z jednej strony obejmujących poprawę estetyki i jakości życia w miastach, a z drugiej stanowiących odpowiedź na wiele wyzwań środowiskowych, w tym zmiany klimatu.
