Najstarszy skrupulatny opis sklepień gotyckich wraz z rysunkami objaśniającymi ich geometryczną budowę opracował wXVII wieku Bartel Ranisch - architekt i badacz gotyckich budowli. W dziele pod tytułem „Beschreibung aller Kirchen-Gebaude der Stadt Dantzig” Ranisch zamieścił inwentaryzację wszystkich gdańskich kościołów gotyckich. Trudność w odczytaniu zapisu B. Ranischa tkwiła po pierwsze w archaicznym języku niemieckim używanym w opisie, po drugie w niezrozumiałym obecnie zapisie geometrycznym wykresów żeber. Podjęto nową interpretację starodruku, odczytano metodę rekonstrukcji sklepień gwiaździstych, którą wykorzystano do budowy wirtualnych modeli poszczególnych sklepień.
Vaults in Gothic buildings were erected in the whole Europe over XII-XVI century. They were dominant for medieval interiors, plaing significant role as an element of construction. Composition and nowadays are considered as masterpieces of engineering and art. Geometric structure of the complex ribs and coverings arrangements were never fully understood, elaborated, or catalogued, what required supplementation. The oldest meticulous description of the Gothic vaults with drawings explaining their geometric structure was developed in the seventeenth century by Bartel Ranisch – architect and researcher of Gothic buildings. In the work entitled Beschreibung aller Kirchen-Gebaude der Stadt Dantzig Ranisch posted an inventory of all Gothic churches in Gdańsk. Difficulty in understanding B. Ranisch writings consists in archaic German language used in the description and in currently incomprehensible geometric notation of ribs graphs. These obstacles were successfully overcame and was formulated a universal method of reconstruction of stellar vaults that were used to build virtual models of respective vaults.
