Przemienniki częstotliwości średniego napięcia (p.cz.) od ok. 8 lat są stosowane w przemysłowych układach napędowych z silnikami prądu przemiennego (asynchronicznymi i synchronicznymi). Początkowo konstrukcja ich obwodów głównych opierała się na przemiennikach częstotliwości niskiego napięcia i transformacji do poziomu napięcia średniego. W drugiej połowie lat 90. wartości napięć wyjściowych powiększono do napięć od 2,4 kV do 6 kV (obecnie nawet do 7,2 kV). Głównymi zastosowaniami przemienników częstotliwości średniego napięcia są napędy pomp i wentylatorów, gdzie możliwe są duże oszczędności energii elektrycznej. Tego typu maszyny robocze, o obciążeniu zmieniającym się w przybliżeniu z kwadratem prędkości wirowania, wymagają w procesach technologicznych w przeważającej większości zmian prędkości w zakresie od ok. 50% do 100% wartości znamionowej.
