The article characterizes the contemporary Russian nationalism taking into consideration its historical roots. The authoress proves that Russian experience in the sphere of identity development is, to a large extend, universal, but it also exhibit some typically Russian features. She emphasizes that radical nationalism is a marginal phenomenon in the Russian society and that it has not grown even in the context of the Chechnya conflict.
