Exotic species of acipenserid fishes have been frequently encountered in the commercial catches of the Baltic Sea, since the early 1990s. Such sightings are rarely reflected as published records. The present paper provides detailed descriptions of two specimens of Russian sturgeons, Acipenser gueldenstaedtii caught in the Exclusive Polish Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea.
On 5 March 2006 an adult specimen of white grouper, Epinephelus aeneus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817), was caught with long-line gear off the Island Dugi otok (between islets Mužanj and Sakarun, eastern Adriatic Sea, Croatian coast, 44°06′46.9″N; 14°53′47.08″E) on a soft, sandy bottom at a depth of 40 meters. The capture location is around 400 km north of the northern range of distribution in the...
Two species previously unrecorded from the Aegean Sea, Nemichthys scolopaceus Richardson, 1848 and Benthocometes robustus (Goode et Bean, 1886), were captured during a bottom trawl off the Marmaris coasts (Turkey). These new records represent respectively the easternmost occurrence of N. scolopaceus and the second record of B. robustus from the eastern Mediterranean Basin.
One specimen (TL = 532 mm, W = 662 g) of the yellowmouth barracuda, Sphyraena viridensis, was caught by an angler on 3 August 2008 in front of the Port of Rijeka (Northern Adriatic). Being caught at the geographic latitude of 45°17′N, makes this record the northernmost occurrence of this species in the Mediterranean.
The first records of Lampris guttatus in the Mediterranean Sea date back to 1807. Yet, until now it has been considered as a rare species (less than 25 specimens recorded in the literature). Since 2008, at least 23 specimens have been fished or observed along the French Mediterranean coast. In this paper, we present an updated review of records in the Mediterranean and discuss the possible link with...
One specimen of the Cadenat’s rockfish, Scorpaena loppei Cadenat, 1943 (Scorpeanidae), was caught off Marmaris (eastern Aegean Sea, Turkey) on 27 December 2008 by bottom trawl net. The specimen was 56.15 mm total length. S. loppei is evidently rare in the Aegean Sea than it is in the western Mediterranean.
Background. Fish gut bacteria may be used as probiotics for fish. Those occurring in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of rohu, Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822), have not been sufficiently studied. This study was intended: to detect bacteria in the intestine of rohu by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); to evaluate the existence of heterotrophic, proteolytic, amylolytic, and cellulolytic bacteria in three...
The barred knifejaw, Oplegnathus fasciatus (Temminck et Schlegel, 1844), a species native to the North Western and Eastern Central Pacific, is recorded from the central Mediterranean for the first time. Two individuals were photographed within a month of each other in Grand Harbour and in Marsamxett Harbour, Malta. It seems likely that the fish were introduced by shipping and different scenarios how...
Background. This study was initiated by the first observations of a coastal and benthic Atlantic fish species—Parablennius pilicornis (Cuvier, 1829) on the southern coasts of France. This fish has been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea since 1963, until recently colonizing its entire western part as well as the Adriatic Italian coasts. The aim of this study is to analyse and understand the dynamics...
Background. The European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), is considered an endangered species and a series of protective measures have been implemented within the European community in order to enhance natural stocks. Restocking natural habitats with larger eels reared from the glass-eel stage in recirculated farming systems may be one solution. Gill diseases caused by monogenean parasites of the genus...
The stonefish, Synanceia verrucosa Bloch et Schneider, 1801, was recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean. The fish was caught by trammel net, at a depth of 3 m, recorded on video and then released. Its occurrence is presumed to be due to either Lessepsian migration or as an escapee from aquaria.
The occurrence of an early life stage of the king of herrings, Regalecus glesne Ascanius, 1772, is reported for the first time from the Adriatic waters. A single larva (SL = 103.4 mm) was found alive in the waters of open Adriatic near a remote Island Palagruža. Findings of early life stages of this species are very rare in the Mediterranean and have previously been reported only from the waters of...
Investigations conducted off the northern Tunisian coast (central Mediterranean) allowed the authors to collect a male of the unicorn leatherjacket filefish, Aluterus monoceros (L.). The specimen is described in this note, including morphometric measurements and meristic counts. This finding constitutes the first record of A. monoceros off the Tunisian coast and the second record for the Mediterranean...
