The influence of solid retention time on cadmium uptake by activated sludge at different concentrations of the metal was studied. Activated sludge was cultivated in a lab-scale bioreactor with plug-flow pattern. Respirometric measurements were applied to evaluate the inhibitive effects of cadmium on activated sludge. The obtained values of the conditional adsorption constant indicate a similar affnity...
An intermittently aerated completely mixing lab-scale bioreactor was applied in the modelling of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification processes carried out in the Carrousel system. Two kinetic models based on the IAWPRC task group kinetic and stoichiometric concept were developed and verified. The model parameters number is reduced and the influence of waste water composition on oxygen transport...
Denitriiication using real wastewaters from chemical production was studied in lab-scale reactors. The wastewater streams contained as main compounds vinyl acetate, acetaldehyde and methanol. The highest denitrification rates were estimated in the wastewater with vinyl acetate. The effect of the tested substrates on endogenous metabolism and nitrification inhibition is discussed.
Half a year experience in sludge dosing from a water treatment plant to the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Holič is presented. Sludge from the water treatment plant containing a high percentage of iron (15 t%) in different forms was used as a coagulant. The dosing of water treatment sludge at the WWTP strengthened the water treatment effect on insoluble substances, phosphorus removal, and...
The purpose of this work was to examine the settling properties of activated sludge from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The experiments were carried out in a bench-scale reactor, fed with wastewater from the University of Olsztyn treatment plant. Concentrations of the examined activated sludge varied between 2.5 and 6.0 kg SS m-3. Laboratory analyses of the sludge comprised: sludge concentration,...
Oxyethylated alcohol ± surfactant C12E10 ± was tested under the conditions of the die-away test with activated sludge as inoculum. The residual surfactant and its biotransformation by-products: short-chained ethoxylates (SCE) and long-and short-chained poly(ethylene glycols) (PEG) were separated and determined using the indirect tensammetric technique. A high percentage of primary biodegradation (98...
This paper characterizes the influence of a wastewater treatment plant with activated sludge aerated by CELPOX devices on the microbiological properties of the air at the plant grounds and in the vicinity. Field studies by the sedimentation method were carried out in seven measurement series in 2001. Sampling posts were each time set with regard to the current meteorological conditions like wind speed...
This experiment was conducted in an aerated single-stage reactor at activated sludge concentration of about 3000 mg· dm-3. The influence of hydraulic retention time on nitrogen removal from rural wastewater was investigated. Hydraulic retention times were 24 and 12 hours. Two series were performed at a constant C/N ratio of 3.5. Enhancement of carbon removal from 83.8% to 87.6% was observed. An increase...
This study indicates that in the wastewater treatment plant "Wschód" in Gdańsk, working in the modified UCT system, the effectiveness of bacteria pollutant removal varies from 92 to 99% and almost 100% of parasites are removed. Despite this, the number of indicator bacteria and periodical presence of Salmonella in the effluent indicates that it is strongly bacteriologically polluted. It...
The aim of the experiment was to analyze the particular processes (biomass synthesis, oxidation, denitrification and accumulation) during carbon removal from wastewater. The experiment was carried out in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) in two series with different organic carbon compounds to nitrogen compounds ratio (COD/N). Organic carbon loading of activated sludge was 0.07 g COD/g·d. Organic carbon...
Nowadays, when pesticides are commonly available and used in an uncontrolled way, the danger of their infiltration into water and to sewage is very serious. Therefore, it is important to check the influence of chosen environmental toxins on sewage biodegradation effects and on the speed of decomposition of organic compounds. This paper presents the results of research into the changes of reaction...
This paper concerns cadmium desorption in subsequent cycles of adsorption/desorption by chemical sorbents such as 2% sodium alginate, sodium alginate with the addition of poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) in the following proportions: 1.5% alginate and 0.5% PVA, 2% alginate and 2% PVA, 2% alginate and 5% PVA, and two kinds of activated sludge immobilized on alginate sorbents. It was proved that adsorption...
The aim of this study was to investigate efficiency of ammonium nitrogen removal from municipal landfill leachate in activated sludge in two-stage SBR reactors. Treated leachate contains low concentrations of organic substances measured as chemical oxygen demand (COD) - 757 mg O2/dm3 and high concentrations of ammonium - 362 mgNNH4/dm3. Nitrification was studied in two parallel, aerated SBR reactors...
The efficiency of organics and nitrogen removal from municipal landfill leachate in activated sludge operated as single and two-stage SBR were investigated. Leachate from mature landfills are characterized by high N/COD ratio (> 0.5). In single activated sludge system at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) 3d and at methanol dosage 8 mg COD/mg NNO3 complete ammonium nitrogen removal was obtained...
Our paper deals with the description of the rheological properties of activated sewage sludge before and after disintegration. There is an assumption that disintegrated activated sewage sludge is able to change rheological properties. These changes probably cause the modification of the structure of activated sewage sludge after disintegration. The reason is that during disintegration, cell walls...
