Changes in the performance of harvesters of different power classes depending on the size of felled trees in thinned stands were assessed using a time study method. Results were compared to values from the catalogue for chainsaw performance. Comparison of the productivity of these two ways of harvest indicated that, depending on the volume of the felled tree, it was 6−8.2 times higher for harvesters...
The article describes courses organized for foresters in Poland in 1918−1939. It demonstrates the importance of such trainings as a supplementary education of forest rangers, timber sorters and resin extractors.
Douglas−fir is the most important introduced forest tree species in Poland. It is included into the frame of the breeding program that needs to test the selected objects. In the described trial the families of 14 plus trees are being tested. They are half−sib families from the open pollination. The significant differences between the families were stated in case of the diameter at the breast height...
The effect of the controlled mycorrhization with the fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme, the application of fungicides (Bayleton 25 WP, Falcon 450 EC, Nimrod 250 EC and Siarkol Extra 80 WP) in the nursery and the use of two types of substrate (a mixture of sterilized Estonian peat with vermiculite and unsterilized Polish peat with perlite) on the growth, level of infestation by powdery mildew and form...
Since the beginning of 2000s the State Forests, National Forest Holding have taken actions to improve the timber sales system. Implementation of the on−line sales in 2006 was one of such actions. The analysis shows that this introduction improved the efficiency of the RDSF in Poznań. Financial profitability doubled, while the yield cash and property sales remained at a stable level.
Based on the literature and own studies, the biology and ecology of the fungus Inonotus obliquus (Fr.) Pilát as well as medicinal properties and practical application of its products were discussed.
Paper analyses relationships between radial growth and seven crown−related parameters (crown length, relative length, width, slenderness, projection area and volume as well as single tree space) for ten alien and native tree species growing in 'common garden' conditions in the WULS−SGGW Forest Experimental Station in Rogów (central Poland). Significant correlation was found between 10− and 15−years...
The adopted rotation age and prescribed cut are found not to be fully respected at any stage of regulation, planning and implementation of cutting plans. As a result, timber, the main crop in forestry, is not uniform in terms of rotation age and fails the adopted criteria of crop maturity. Protective forests are not subject to management unless cut determination derives from silvicultural needs, without...
Paper presents the results of research on the productivity and economic effectiveness of timber harvesting in stands managed under complex cutting systems. Use of the operating time of a work−shift, including wood processing, loads preparation for skidding and changes at work sites, was low and amounted to 0.62. The main categories of the operating time were delimbing (45%) and travelling (31%). The...
The anatomy and functioning of stem secondary xylem in relation to the decline of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) was examined and the hypothesis that declining trees show changes in the structure of wood, resulting in impaired water transport was tested. Anatomical analyses were carried out on samples comprising annual rings formed between 1970 and 2009 and collected at the breast height of...
An influence of environmental changes upon forest tree species competition was studied for suggested scenario of environmental changes (3−4°C increase of monthly temperatures), 8 main tree species and 6 natural regions. For a synthetic assessment of the reaction of various species for thermal and higric parameters of the climate, the growth multipliers DDGF and SMGF were used. The main environmental...
Mid−forest ponds play a crucial role in shaping water management in micro−catchments by storing and sup− plying ground water in adjacent forest habitats. Supply of the ground water in adjacent areas by water from the ponds is particularly important during the summer half−year when forests are at full vegetation and periods of rainfall deficiency may occur.
The study was based on the empirical material collected from 78 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn (46 plots) and Stare Jabłonki (32 plots) Forest Districts. On the basis of the collected material, a breast height diameter growth model has been developed for the beech growing in the understorey of pine−beech stands. The developed function is an integral part of the growth model...
We analysed 7 territories of the nightjar located in the Puławy Forest District (eastern Poland). Density of the breeding population on the studied area was 0.88 territory/km2. The smallest territory covered 4.5 ha, while the biggest one – 18.7 ha (average 13 ha). Birds were found in a loose birch and pine forest, in the plantation and nearby the working railway. Significant differences in open area...
In total, 240 nest boxes for water birds were assessed during 2006 − 2010 at six localities in South Bohemia region (Czech Republic). Occupancy and nest effect rate of the boxes was monitored. Subsequently there was analysed relation between the box occupancy and potential factors affecting this quantity
Study analysis the influence of selected factors on the size of tawny owl Strix aluco territories in the forests of Lublin region. The survey was held in years 2005 and 2006 using the voice stimulation. The territory area was determined using Minimum Convex Polygon method. 43 territories with the average size of 18.8 ha were set on 26 study sites. The largest territory was found for birds during laying...
Armillaria root rot is one of the most important diseases in Polish forests. Study assesses if mycelium mixed with soil and metabolites of antagonistic Trichoderma reduce the occurrence of Armillaria. No influence of Trichoderma on the growth of Armillaria ostoyae rhyzomorphs and mycelium was found.
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected tree stability indices described by individual biometric characteristics on the formation of their wind resistance. The analysis of tree stability was based on easily measurable tree traits, such as height, breast height diameter, crown parameters as well as the centre of gravity and slenderness factor. Investigations were conducted in wind−damaged...
