Łowiectwo na ziemiach polskich ma bardzo bogatą tradycję, którą ziemiaństwo z pietyzmem kultywowało, jako rozrywkę przynależną tej warstwie. Wspólne polowania stanowiły formę towarzyskiego kontaktu w obrębie własnej sfery. Odbywano zarówno widowiskowe łowy par force, obławy na wilki z nagonką, zasadzania się na łosie i rysie na poleskich bagnach, jak i piesze, w małym gronie polowania na zwierzynę drobną i ptactwo w swych majątkach. Polowania były ważnym elementem życia ziemiaństwa wieku XIX i do schyłku istnienia tej warstwy społecznej w XX w. O wielkiej roli, jaką myślistwo spełniało zarówno na gruncie towarzyskim jak i gospodarczym dowiadujemy się z dokumentów i wspomnień. Poruszano głównie tematy dotyczące doskonalenia sposobów polowań, rodzajów broni, hodowli psów myśliwskich oraz zwrócono baczną uwagę na problem ochrony i hodowli zwierzyny łownej. Tematyka łowiecka była również obecna w literaturze i sztuce omawianego okresu. Utrwalona w ten sposób kultura łowiecka, wraz z przekazywanymi przez pokolenia tradycjami, przetrwała w ten sposób do dzisiaj.
Hunting has a very rich tradition on Polish soil, which was cultivated with reverence by the landowners as enterteiment that belongs to that layer of that social class. Hunting together was a form of social contract within their own group. There were held both spectacular par force hunts, hunts for wolves with a battue, ambushes on moose and lynx on the swamps of Polesie as well as hunts for small animals and birds, on foot in a small group in their own demesne. Hunting was an important element in the life of landed class of the XIXth century and till the end of that social class in the XXth century. We learn about great role of hunting in both social and economic life from private letters, memoirs and numerous hunting press. The most often raised subjects were ways to improve hunting methodes, different kinds of weapons, breeding of hunting dogs, very close attention was paid to the issue of protection and breeding of the wild game. The subject of hunting was also present in the art and literature of this period. Embed in that way the culture of hunting survived until today, along with the traditions passed with the generations.
