The article is devoted to the role of education in the incapacitation/emancipation of Japanese women. The authoress discusses various aspects of the possibilities and limitations of educational access, based on the binary and essentialist construction of gender in Japanese society. The special emphasis is put on the lack of opportunities of Japanese women on the job market as well as the role of women's educational credentials in creating a 'marriage capital'. In the last part of the article the future scenarios of the relation beetwen gender and education are reconsidered.
