The question about the Church's role in the education on the Polish lands in the 19th century is still debated. The interpretation of the sources provides an interesting outlook onto the Church's role in this particular aspect. The article outlines certain enterprises undertaken by the Church in the general education on the Polish lands in the second half of the 19th century. In place of the environmental protection, which was not yet valid in the 19th century the Church suggested molding the surrounding environment as a way of continuing the act of creation. Man was to actively take part in modeling the natural environment together with caring for churches, cemeteries, various places of cult, especially crosses and statues standing on the roads illustrating the Catholic character of Poland. A great number of the Polish people formed their attitude towards the natural environment only on the premises coming from the church itself, Catholic press or school.
