A new interphase distance relaying algorithm for series-compensated transmission lines is proposed in this paper. The fault impedance can be correctively calculated using the proposed algorithm without requirement of the parameters of series capacitor device. The series capacitor can be simplified as a linearized impedance during the fault period, but its parameters can be used as variables in fault...
The U.S. Army Research Laboratory has sponsored a capacitor development program for film-dielectric capacitors. The program has evaluated dielectric materials for high energy density capacitors from industrial and academic research programs. High-performance capacitors have been developed that meet the needs of today's military applications. The performance of recently developed capacitors will be...
This paper describes the design and implementation of a prototype 30kW, 200kHz pulsed power supply. A power density greater than 100W/inch3 is achieved with the converter operating at a high ambient temperature of 65 ??C, by utilizing various technologies on topology, control, devices, passives, and thermal management, which can help reduce the converter size. The experimental results demonstrate...
This study investigates a phase-locked loop (PLL) controlled parallel resonant converter (PRC) for a pulse power capacitor charging application. The dynamic nature of the capacitor charging is such that it causes a shift in the resonant frequency of the PRC. Using the proposed control method, the PRC can be optimized to operate with its maximum power capability and guarantee ZVS operation, even when...
This paper presents a proof-of-concept design of a MEMS tunable capacitor for an electromagnetic cavity resonator, by using a circular plate electrostatic zipping actuator. The design, fabrication and mechanical testing of a device containing the actuator and the capacitor will be presented. The testing results are compared with a finite element model using coupled-field analysis with ANSYS.
