The aims, requirements and design of the LHCb experiment are introduced, with particular emphasis put on the design of the RICH system. Subsequently the development of the Pad HPD, one of the candidate photodetectors for the readout of the RICH system, is described.
We discuss the determination of sin 2 θ lepteff from measurements of forward-backward asymmetries and τ polarization in the process e + e - -> +- at Z energies. We discuss the systematic uncertainties, and point out possible improvements in combining the LEP experiments' results.
