The model reaction of n-butyllithium with excess (11 M equivalents) 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) was reinvestigated using modern characterization techniques including SEC, one dimensional and two dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D NMR) spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS). The products were the monoadduct, 1,1-diphenylhexane (nBuDPEH), and the diadduct,...
This study investigated the factors responsible for molecular interactions leading to self-assembly between the molecules of sorbitol and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) carrying organic and inorganic side groups. The study also assessed the utility of such molecular adducts as processing aids which will aid preparation of polymer compounds, films, and spun fibers. Several POSS molecules...
Ternary non-covalent interactions between carbon nanofibers (CNFs), oxidized carbon nanofibers (ox-CNFs), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chains, and benzotriazole-containing UV stabilizers were analyzed using Fourier-transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), time-resolved fluorescence emission spectroscopy, and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. The results indicated that PMMA chains form...
For the first time, the scope of Fisher esterification has been extended to fullerene derivatives to improve the synthesis of alkyne-functionalized fullerenes (fullerynes) using 1-chloronaphthalene as a solvent and a specially-designed, home-made reactor to promote high yield. The design allows for higher solubility of fullerene derivatives and a continuous azeotropic distillation for the removal...
An ultrasonically-aided extrusion process was developed for fast in situ compatibilization of immiscible polymer blends. PET, PEN, and their 50/50 blend were ultrasonically extruded at various amplitudes. PET underwent homopolymerization and degradation, respectively, at ultrasonic amplitudes of 7.5 and 10 μm, while PEN underwent degradation at amplitudes of 5, 7.5, and 10 μm. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry...
Oligomerization of ethylene oxide during the functionalization of poly(butadienyl)lithium in benzene and cyclohexane at 25 o C has been investigated by MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR. Chemically significant amounts of oligomer were found using 4equiv. of ethylene oxide ([EO]/[PLi]) after 12 h in both benzene and cyclohexane. No oligomer was observed when the reaction time was minimized.
