A new class of oligopyridine ligands bearing disaccharides linked to the 4- and 4′-positions of a 2,2′-bipyridine or the 4′-position of a 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine metal-binding domain are described. Representative ligands with furanosylfuranose and pyranosylpyranose (cellobiose) substituents have been prepared.
The new ligand 4'-pentafluorophenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (2) has been prepared with a view to utilising the electrophilic reactivity at the 4-position of the substituent to provide access to sugar-functionalised compounds. Although 2 reacts cleanly with simple alcohols, attempts to incorporate spacers or to attach sugars were unsuccessful.
