This work presents a new shoulder-elbow exoskeleton (NESM) for upper-limb neurological rehabilitation. The system has four active degrees of freedom, namely shoulder adduction/abduction, flexion/extension and intra/extra rotation and elbow flexion/extension, together with eight additional passive degrees of freedom for the alignment of the motor axes to the human joint axes, regardless the user's...
A new all-optical technique to convert on-off keying (OOK) signals into incoherently optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) signals is proposed and investigated. The technique is based on two stages of cross-gain modulation effect in semiconductor optical amplifiers. The output encoded signal presents an improved optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and may be generated at the same wavelength...
We fabricate a microstructured Erbium-doped tellurite fiber and demonstrate laser emission. A simple double-pump configuration (980 nm) is used. A 5 cm fiber generates a laser at 1553.3 nm with an OSNR of ∼21 dB.
We present a field-trial evaluation of an in-line fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) without polarization dependent gain (PDG). This parametric amplifier uses a polarization diversity technique (PDT) to reduce the PDG to less than 0.05 dB. We analyzed the performance of a system with an in-line FOPA comparing the results of its bit-error-rate (BER) with the BER of a system with an in-line Erbium...
A field-trial evaluation of a one-pump fibre optic parametric amplifier with an independent polarization gain is experimentally demonstrated. This independent polarization gain was obtained by using the polarization diversity technique. The device was configured as an in-line amplifier for a wavelength division multiplexed system with 5 signals modulated at 10 Gb/s. The signals were propagated through...
In this work we present experimental results concerning a new technique that uses parametric amplification to merge two binary signals into a single quaternary amplitude-shift keying (4-ASK) signal. We also propagate such quaternary signal through a 75-km long standard fibre link; the measured eye-opening penalty was lower than 1 dB.
We present an experimental investigation of cross-layer effect caused by fibre four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength converters. Measurements, performed on a 40-km long standard fibre link located in a field-trial network, suggest that the use of such converters may induce power penalties as high as 2.9 dB on the packet error rate (PER) of Internet Protocol (IP) applications. We also present empirical...
