It is well-known that in multiphase drives the spatial harmonics of the air-gap magnetic field can be controlled independently of each other. In this paper it is shown how the third-order spatial harmonic of the magnetic field can be used to estimate the rotor speed without the need of a mechanical sensor. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of the developed sensorless speed observer.
This paper presents an electric drive consisting of a multiphase induction motor fed by a multiphase inverter. The control system is similar to that of a traditional field-oriented control for three-phase motors, but the machine speed is estimated by a novel sensorless observer. Since multiphase motors with M phases (M is supposed odd) have the capability of controlling the odd spatial harmonics of...
Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a promising multilevel topology for high-voltage applications that has been developed in recent years. The control of MMCs has been analyzed in detail in many papers, showing that the converter capacitors can be kept charged and balanced by controlling the circulating current of each leg. The set-point signal of the circulating current is probably the most difficult...
In the last few years, renewable energies have been encouraged by worldwide governments to meet energy saving policies. Among renewable energy sources, fuel cells have attracted much interest for a wide variety of research areas. Fuel cell-based residential-scaled power supply systems take advantage of simultaneous generation of power and heat, reducing the overall fossil fuel consumption and utilities...
The diagnosis of induction machine faults is commonly carried out by means of Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA), i.e., by classical spectrum analysis of the input currents. Specifically in case of broken bars, the amplitude of the left sideband component of a phase current is monitored in order to sense its signature. However MCSA has some drawbacks that are still under investigation. The main...
Since late 1990s multiphase drives have become a serious alternative to three-phase drives in some particular applications such as electric ship propulsion, locomotive traction, electric vehicles and high power industrial applications. Nowadays the research activity is focused on the development of control strategies that can exploit the degrees of freedom that exist in multiphase machines. As known,...
For modern large wind farms, it is more and more interesting to design an efficient diagnostics system oriented to wind turbine generators based on doubly-fed induction machine (DFIM). In this paper, a complete system will be analyzed by suitable simulations to deeply study fault influence and to identify the best diagnostic procedure to perform predictive maintenance. All the research efforts have...
