We theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that direct backward third harmonic generation (THG) waves can be comparable in magnitude with forward THG waves in nanostructures, such as ZnO thin films and nanoparticles of CdSe and Fe3O4.
Functional third-harmonic-generation (THG) microscopy is proposed/demonstrated by labeling the samples with silver nanoparticles. Over 100-fold THG enhancement can be observed by coinciding the signal frequency with the surface-plasmon-resonance frequency of <50-nm silver nanoparticles.
