We have developed a vectorial quantum model of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in one-dimensional nonlinear photonic-band-gap structures. According to the obtained results these structures represent a promising perspective source of entangled two-photon states. In particular, entangled two-photon states antisymmetric in frequencies can be generated. Such entangled photons behave in the way...

We studied a ZnSe/MgF/sub 2/ multilayer in order to modulate its optical reflectance at a fixed wavelength, 628 nm. An electrically induced temperature increase is responsible for changes in the refractive index of the layers. As a result the reflected signal is decreased.
Summary form only given. Photonic band gap (PBG) crystals have been the object of intense investigation regarding the electromagnetic wave propagation phenomena at optical frequencies. Many practical applications of these structures have been suggested, at least in one dimension, for linear and nonlinear systems. We mention the photonic band edge laser, a nonlinear optical limiter and diode, an efficient...
Summary form only given. The 1980s/1990s have witnessed an intense investigation of electromagnetic wave propagation phenomena at optical frequencies in periodic structures. These structures are usually referred to as photonic band gap (PBG) crystals. Despite the fact that most applications currently available make use of the linear properties of PBGs, the study of nonlinear dynamics has also been...
Summary form only given. The theoretical enhancement of second harmonic (SH) generation at the band edge of a periodic, quarter-wave/half-wave PBG structure has been previously discussed. The structure was chosen so that both the pump and second harmonic fields were tuned near the first- and second-order band edges respectively. In the present work, we extend this kind of consideration to a more general...
