We compare the performances of different spot size converter (SSC) designs consisting of backend waveguide arrays (“dot-like”, “cross-like”, “stripes”, “box”) at the facet, adiabatically coupled to tapered Si waveguides. For the study, we use SiON waveguides and a low index step “box” waveguide.

We experimentally investigate a 16-dimensional modulation format applicable to multi-core fiber transmission, and demonstrate over 14,000 km transmission for a BER of 1E-3, a 55 % improvement in reach compared to DP-BPSK for the same spectral efficiency.

We present results of photonic BiCMOS process development enabling the fabrication of monolithically integrated receivers for 40Gbps and beyond. Focus is on the challenge to fabricate simultaneously 200GHz SiGe HBTs and Ge photodiodes with enough bandwidth.

Kerr nonlinearity compensation by optical phase conjugation is demonstrated in a WDM PDM 16-QAM system. Improved received signal quality is reported for both dispersion-compensated and dispersion-uncompensated transmission and a comparison with digital backpropagation is provided.

Parametric optical signal processing is reviewed for silicon nano-rib-waveguides with a reverse-biased pin-junction. Phase-sensitive parametric amplification with a phase-sensitive extinction of more than 20 dB has been utilized for the regeneration of DPSK signals.

We experimentally demonstrate the demultiplexing of 8×13.4 Gbaud OFDM-QPSK subcarriers using a silicon nanophotonic-based discrete Fourier transform (DFT) filter. All eight subcarriers showed less than 1.5 dB OSNR penalty compared to the theoretical limit.

We review our recent work showing that Si and InP Mach-Zehnder modulators can have similar performance, while the first offer the advantage of monolithic integration with electronics. Development status of modulators in photonic BiCMOS is presented.

We experimentally and numerically show that the Brillouin back scattering can result in signal distortions in diversity loop-based polarization insensitive single-pump fiber-optical parametric amplifiers, limiting the distortion-free gain to 10–15 dB for typical highly nonlinear fibers.

The performance of a polarization-independent fiber-based optical parametric amplifier is experimentally investigated in terms of amplification and wavelength conversion for optical phase conjugation applications using 5×28-GBd PDM 16-QAM signals. Good conjugated signal quality up to 13-dB gain is obtained.

Effective Kerr nonlinearity mitigation is experimentally demonstrated using optical phase conjugation in the middle of an 800-km dispersion-compensated link for a 5-channel WDM 28-GBd PDM 16-QAM signal. A Q-factor improvement of 0.9 dB over no mitigation allows a BER<3.8×10−3.

We report on the experimental demonstration of a GaAs IQ modulator. The device consists of two “nested” Mach–Zehnder modulators for the inphase and quadrature component and is operated at a symbol rate of 25 GBd. The performance of a FOPA as inline-amplifier for 28-GBd 16-QAM signals at 20-dB gain in a 50-GHz 5-channel DWDM system is experimentally investigated. Less than 0.7-dB OSNR penalty at a BER of 1×10−3 was measured with 0-dBm per-channel output power.
