We demonstrate generation of linear frequency chirps exhibiting an excursion of 50 GHz (λ0=1548nm) using an optoelectronic phase-locked loop and integrated silicon photonics interferometer (FSR=3.0GHz), demonstrating the feasibility of an integrated chip-scale frequency-modulated continuous-wave LADAR source.
Using a coherent optical demodulation technique, we have independently measured the AM and PM resulting from current modulation at GHz rates of an I.L. VCSEL at 1.55 µm. The variation of the depth of AM and PM are measured as function of RF modulation frequency and power. Two regimes of modulation for the I.L. VCSEL are explored: 1) At low frequencies < 10 MHz where thermal modulation dominates...
We independently measure the optical phase and amplitude modulation characteristics of an injection-locked VCSEL for the first time at GHz rates, using a coherent optical demodulation scheme, giving us insight into two different phase modulation regimes.
The phase response of an injection locked semiconductor laser that is used as the phase modulator in a resonant cavity linear interferometric intensity modulator is studied in detail. It is shown that, signal-to-intermodulation ratio of such a modulator is affected by the injection ratio, linewidth enhancement factor of the semiconductor laser, residual amplitude modulation, depth of phase modulation,...
An optical frequency stability measurement setup based on a Fabry-Perot Etalon reference is presented that results in measurements with ~1.4 kHz optical frequency resolution at update rates of 90 Hz.
