A step-index 10-mode (6-LP-mode) fiber (10MF) with large effective index differences is fabricated and experimentally validated for weakly-coupled few-mode transmission. Modal crosstalk of less than −13.9 dB between 6-LP modes was achieved in an 81-km long 10MF with a pair of mode multiplexer and demultiplexer.
Design and fabrication results of a 6-mode 19-core fiber with the highest relative core multiplicity factor of 30 for weakly-coupled mode-multiplexed uncoupled-core-multiplexed transmission are detailed. Technical challenges for long-haul transmission are also discussed.
We experimentally evaluate performance of selective six-mode multiplexer based on mode selective couplers. The mode-group coupling is suppressed by −20dB, maintaining OSNR penalty of 3dB due to mode multiplexing even with use of 6×6 MIMO.
We investigate mode conversion using phase plates for 10-mode fibers. Crosstalk from undesirable modes is unavoidable for mode conversion to LP11 or LP12 due to imperfection of phase-plate-based mode conversion, while it can be suppressed for LP02, LP21, and LP31.
