We demonstrate 128-SP-QAM experimentally for the first time and compare the performance to PM-16QAM at the same symbol rate (10.5 Gbaud). We find a 1.7 dB increased sensitivity and 50% increased transmission reach over PM-16QAM.
We compare polarization-switched QPSK and polarization-multiplexed QPSK in a WDM system with 25 GHz channel spacing. We investigate experimentally the transmission distance as a function of the data rate for both modulation formats.
This paper experimentally presents the first direct comparison between two 120-Gbit/s 8-ary formats and show that both can be superior over different distances. The performances of two formats are also evaluated over three different dispersion-maps.
