The formation of iron fluoride, and the friction and wear characteristics of iron on an iron frictional system were studied in a vacuum and in various gas atmospheres of different oxygen content under branched perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluid lubrication and dry sliding. The results showed that the friction and wear with PFPE lubrication is almost independent of the dissolved oxygen content, except...
To find out if electrons, which are thought to decompose the lubricant, are emitted at the sliding contacts of head-disk in magnetic recording media, electron emission was measured together with friction coefficient in a frictional system consisting of an Al 2 O 3 ball (head material) sliding on a carbon film coated on glass substrate under dry sliding conditions. Friction tests were...
Surface potential and friction coefficient were measured simultaneously during scratching of insulating materials made of ceramics and polymers with a diamond stylus in ambient air. The insulating solids used were Al 2 O 3 , Si 3 N 4 , glass and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It was found that the surface potential and friction coefficient have a positive correlation.
