Progress on advanced active and passive photonic components that are required for high-speed optical communications over hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber at wavelengths around 2 μm is described in this paper. Single-frequency lasers capable of operating at 10 Gb/s and covering a wide spectral range are realized. A comparison is made between waveguide and surface normal photodiodes with the latter...
We examine the time resolved bit error rate of a 10.7 Gbd DQPSK system using a fast switching slotted Fabry-Pérot transmitter. It is shown that error free transmission is possible within approximately 12 ns of a wavelength switching event.
We present a novel tunable laser concept. The device employs an active interleaved rear mirror for wavelength selection and tuning enhancement. Rapid wavelength switching in the laser is investigated using a heterodyne method for time resolved spectral characterization. A very short transition time of 60 ps and SMSR recovery after less than 2 ns are observed.
Fast wavelength switching of a two-section slotted FP laser structure is presented. The slot design enables operation at 5 discrete wavelength channels spaced by 10 nm by tuning one section of the device. These wavelengths operate with SMSR in excess of 35 dB, and a switching time of approximately 1ns is demonstrated.
