Recent progress on the development of a high power 170 GHz gyrotron obtained in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is presented. Firstly, the repetitive operation of 800 kW/600 s with an interval of 20-30 min was performed. The electrical efficiency was 52-57% with the depressed collector. The 72 shots of 88 shots was very stable 600 s oscillation. No damage was found on the gyrotron by this test....
Microwave rocket is new application of atmospheric discharge in a high power millimeter-wave beam. An ionization front of plasma in a high power microwave beam propagates towards a radiation source absorbing microwave power. During its propagation, a shock wave is formed. A shock wave produces impulsive force. In microwave rocket repetitive millimeter-wave pulses generate propulsive thrust. This kind...
A steady-state operation of 1 MW/800 s with the efficiency of 55%, which exceeded 1 MW/400 s of the performance required in ITER, was demonstrated in 170 GHz gyrotron. The oscillation characteristics in the long pulse operation was clarified, and the advanced operation scenario of the gyrotron to the high efficiency oscillation was newly established by controlling a pitch factor of the electron beam...
A high power millimeter-wave beam generated by a 170 GHz gyrotron was injected into a cylindrical tube and atmospheric plasma was generated. The ionization front and a shock wave were propagated in the tube during the millimeter-wave pulse. From the pressure history measurement and plasma emission imaging in the tube, the propagation velocity of the shock wave was found identical to that of the ionization...
