The authors report the first use of a high gain (24 dB) and high saturated output power (>100 mW) Pr/sup 3+/-doped fluorozirconate fibre amplifier in a 2.5 Gbit/s system. A sensitivity of -37.3 dBm has been achieved when used as a preamplifier in conjunction with a pin-FET receiver. This the authors believe represents the most sensitive reported 1.3 mu m direct detection receiver at this bit rate...
A depressed-cladding, highly-germania-doped, distributed erbium-doped silica fibre amplifier has been fabricated exhibiting high gain and low dispersion. A gain of 27 dB over 10 km was achieved at 1.554 mu m. The fibre could be made transparent at this wavelength with only 15 mW pump power at 1.485 mu m. This is the lowest power requirement reported for lossless transmission.<<ETX>>
