GanA new bi-functional photorefractive host polymer, poly{(2-carbazolylethyl acrylate)-co-2-[2′,5′-dimethyl-4′-(4″-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy]-ethyl acrylate}, was synthesized. The well known nonlinear optical molecule 2,5-dimethyl-4-(p-nitrophenylazo)anisole was used as the electro-optic side-chain and the carbazole group as the holes transport side-chain. The polymer was doped with the holes donor 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone for photo-carriers generation and N-ethylcarbazole for lowering the glass transition temperature. The composite film exhibited a two-beam coupling coefficient of 78cm−1 and a net diffraction efficiency of 12% at a wavelength of 633nm with an applied electric field of 92Vμm−1 under room temperature. Contary to what is found in crystals, the two-beam coupling coefficient is illumination-intensity-dependent. A theoretical explanation was given. Moreover, long term stability was observed due to the reduction of the component number.A. polymersD. optical propertiesE. nonlinear optics
