HiPER and ELI are two pan-European projects to establish large-scale laser research facilities. HiPER is dedicated to laser fusion energy research, ELI focuses the exploitation of ultra-short and ultra-intense laser pulses. Both systems will require DPSSL systems delivering ns pulses of kJ-scale energy at multi-Hz repetition rates.
Astra Gemini is a dual-beam petawatt Ti:sapphire laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the U.K. We report measurements characterising the laser beam quality, pulse energy, and pulse duration of the first beam line.
We report the findings of a detailed study of the impact of the Vulcan OPCPA pre-amplifier on contrast. Using near-field apertures, the ASE pedestal was reduced to 4x10-8 of the intensity of the main pulse.
