The nonlinear process of cross polarized wave (XPW) generation, which has been broadly used for temporal contrast enhancement and spectral broadening [1, 2], continue to attract interest in different application schemes. A feature of space-time focusing (STF), which occurs at the focus of spatially dispersed beam, is to deliver highly localized intensity at the focus without incurring high non-linear...
Polarization resolved study on the operation of a quasi-isotropic cavity erbium-doped fiber laser revealed a novel form of periodic fast polarization switching between the two orthogonal linearly polarized eigen-modes of the laser. We show both experimentally and theoretically that the operation of the laser is a result of the polarization domain formation, an effect in analog to the magnetic domain...
We report on the recent contrast enhancement of Astra-Gemini laser. It is shown that the stretcher gratings contribute significantly to the contrast pedestal. Implementing higher-quality gratings resulted in a significant contrast improvement. We have also investigated and quantified the contribution to the contrast pedestal from each individual grating in the stretcher.
A Laser-Wakefiled acceleration (LWFA) experiment, aiming the production of high-quality electron relativistic beams, was performed at Astra-Gemini Laser Facility. The interaction was used sub-50 fs laser pulses with energies in the range 4 – 10 J and structured gas cells with lengths of 2 – 4 cm filled with hydrogen as target. Reliable and reproducible electron beams with energies close to 1 GeV were...
Special considerations of operating the dual beam facility Gemini are presented. Amplifiers in Astra have been upgraded to improve the contrast, stability and performance with wedged Ti:Sapphire crystals and spatial filtering.
In this paper we describe the development of a novel front-end capable of generating pulses with >100nm bandwidth at 910nm, a pulse duration <30fs and energies at the joule level. This system has been developed as a seed source for the development of a 10PW facility for the Vulcan laser. The development is based on large scale OPCPA with the goal of producing pulses with focused intensities...
In this paper we have reported a jitter-free ultra-fast broadband OPA amplification in the sub-ps time domain at the repetition rate of 1 kHz. A novel broadband laser pulse source of ~180 nm (FWHM) at ~910 nm was demonstrated for Vulcan 10 PW OPCPA laser system development.
Summary form only given. Potassium titanyl arsenate (KTA) has the advantage of enhanced transparency in the mid-infrared region (3 /spl mu/m) over KTP, which is the well established material for up-converting 1-/spl mu/m laser radiation into the 1.5-/spl mu/m region. Although parametric oscillation in KTP at 3.26 /spl mu/m has been demonstrated: the absorption of the idler wavelength is critical in...
