The reaction of alumina isopropoxide (AIP) in straight-chain primary alcohols at high temperatures yields the alkyl derivatives of boehmite. Crystallinity of the alkyl derivatives of boehmite can be controlled by the feed ratio of AIP/alcohol. The alumina samples derived from the products having poor crystallinity had large pore-volumes (1.16–3.24 cm3/g).
The alkyl derivatives of boehmite were prepared by solvothermal reaction of aluminum isopropoxide in n-alcohols (ethanol, 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 1-octanol and 1-dodecanol) and the products were recovered as aerogel/xerogel by the removal of the solvent at the end of reaction.
