Corona poling of a multilayered stack of phosphorus-doped and undoped silica glass layers on a fused silica substrate results in the formation of two 8 μm-wide nonlinear regions located near both surfaces of the sample.
Phosphate glasses are excellent host materials for lasers using rare-earth ion transitions. Combining highly-doped phosphate glasses and advanced fiber drawing techniques, we developed phosphate glass fiber lasers and will review recent advances in their performance.
Volume gratings were UV inscribed in WMS-15 glass-ceramic at 193 and 248 nm without additional processing. Weak, easily bleached gratings resulted from fluences below 0.3 kJ/cm2. Stable gratings with Deltan ~ 6times10-5 were formed at higher fluences.
Novel vertical directional couplers, consisting of graded-index planar waveguides, were realised by field-assisted K/sup +/-ion exchange in glass. Normal mode measurements of the coupling length are compared to results based on numerical simulations of the diffusion equation and the beam propagation method.<<ETX>>
