We consider virtual optical network (VON) provisioning over a flexible-grid multi-domain optical network with the objective of minimizing total network cost, including the cost of transponders, regenerators, and spectrum. We propose a three-step heuristic algorithm that addresses the issues of domain selection, topology aggregation, and routing, modulation format, and spectrum assignment (RMSA) when...
We propose transceiver sharing schemes at ROADM nodes for shared restoration in flexible grid optical networks in order to improve the utilization of transceivers for backup paths. The flexible ROADM architecture with a pool of transceivers achieves the highest utilization.
In this paper, we aim to minimize the total network cost in flexible-grid optical networks with multiple line rates. Besides transponder cost, regenerator cost, and shared infrastructure cost, the cost of regenerator sites is also considered. We first provide the problem definition and formulate the problem as an integer linear program (ILP). We also propose a heuristic algorithm considering both...
We evaluate contiguous, discrete and hybrid slot assignment methods under both quasi-static and dynamic traffic conditions. We show the tradeoff among these methods in terms of network performance and system complexity.
We study the impact of partitioning client-side fiber cross-connects on the blocking performance of colorless, non-directional ROADM based dynamic optical networks. Simulations show that smaller fiber cross-connects (16×16, 48×48) can achieve low blocking.
We show that blocking in dynamic networks of colorless, non-directional ROADMs is tolerant to intra-node contention when contention-aware routing/wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms are used. An optional client-side cross-connect enables low blocking with simpler RWA variants.
We consider survivable traffic grooming through dedicated lightpath protection in a network with impairment constraints. Results evaluate the dependency of network equipment placement on survivable lightpath provisioning in terms of the network cost.
In this paper, we address the problem of survivable traffic grooming in optical WDM networks in which lightpaths are hop constrained. Survivability is provisioned at the wavelength granularity through either dedicated or shared path protection schemes. We propose an auxiliary-graph-based algorithm that addresses grooming, protection, and impairment constraints in a combined manner and that determines...
We consider traffic grooming and regenerator placement in an optical network in which lightpaths are hop-constrained by impairments. Combining grooming with regenerator placement reduces costs compared to addressing traffic grooming and regenerator placement separately.
In this paper, we address the problem of traffic grooming and regenerator placement in a WDM optical network in which lightpaths are hop-constrained by physical impairments. The efficient placement of regenerators and electronic grooming equipment at ROADM nodes for a given network topology is required such that all traffic demands can be supported with minimum cost. We present a detailed ROADM node...
Using numerical simulation of a dynamic network, we quantify the intra-node blocking occurring in colorless, non-directional Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs). Designs including a client-side fiber cross connect are shown to offer lower blocking probability.
