Few-micron-scale vertical silicon coupler that has high coupling efficiency, weak wavelength dependence, and weak incident angle dependence of wavelength window was achieved with vertically curved silicon waveguide “elephant coupler” formed by ion implantation method compatible with LSI manufacturing technology.
A high-efficiency continuous-wave laser-diode-pumped Yb:YAG laser has been realized at room temperature by high intensity pumping. The slope efficiency and optical-to-optical conversion efficiency were 77 % and 72 % for the absorbed pump power, respectively.
We discuss the concept of combination of nonlinearity equalizer and soft-decision FEC decoder. The appropriate choice of equalization performance and error correcting capability of FEC is essential for performance optimization with existing nonlinear phase noise.
We have studied the impact of nonlinear effects on 43 Gb/s electronically pre-equalized DQPSK signals. A nonlinear power threshold around 1 dB higher than for conventional DQPSK signals with optical dispersion compensation was confirmed.
The distortion of coherent signals caused by nonlinear effects were studied experimentally using a real time DSP at 40 Gbps. It was shown that coherent signals were primarily degraded by SPM in the case of a 50 GHz ROADM grid. The XPM-induced penalty increased on reducing the channel spacing to 25 GHz.
Electronic pre-equalization of chromatic dispersion for 43 Gb/s DQPSK has been demonstrated employing a developed test chip. The chip enables the BER in fibre with 2450 ps/nm of dispersion to be improved to 7.6E-05 without an optical dispersion compensator.
10 Gbps DPSK electronic pre-equalization transmission was demonstrated over 500 km of 8,170 ps/nm SMF in the laboratory and over 360 km of field-installed SMF without any optical dispersion compensation.
The burst-mode 3R receiver using monolithic ICs for 10-Gbit/s-class optical access networks is reported. In a point-to-multipoint access system like a passive optical network (PON), the receiver at the optical line terminal (OLT) must be able to handle burst-mode optical packets with significantly different powers and phases. An OLT receiver with high sensitivity with instantaneous response to burst...
We report a compact, low-loss, and robust fiber collimator making use of a specific graded index fiber in which a wide Gaussian beam propagates. The fiber simplifies fabrication and alignment of collimators.
