This paper proposes a novel optical switch architecture that attains colorless/directionless/contentionless (C/D/C) capabilities. The proposed architecture combines simple switches and AWGs, and is easy to implement. We experimentally confirm its technical feasibility in an experiment.
Compact and practical 4-degree optical cross-connect equipment with add/drop ports is realized for use in connecting ROADM ring networks. Eight 40-channel AWGs and forty 4×4 matrix switches are integrated in a 2-U high chassis.
With the present technology and environment, we are able to interact with other people using online communities, while sometimes missing the opportunity to meet people in the real world. Location-based services have a strong correlation with the real world, and have the potential to develop online connections into off-line connections. However, most of these location-based services observe only users'...
The present work developed a basis to explore numerous damage events utilizing Self-Organizing Map (SOM) introducing Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence as an appropriate similarity for frequency spectra of damage events. Firstly, we validated the use of KL divergence to frequency spectra of damage events. The experiment using the datasets of damage related sounds showed that the kernel SOM using KL...
We introduce a compact matrix-switch-based hierarchical optical path cross-connect prototype system that exploits integrated colorless waveband multi/demultiplexers. Its performance ensures cost-effective networks can be created.
Fully integrated electric propulsion systems are gaining popularity in both commercial and military sectors. Propulsion motor manufacturers are investigating new direct drive solutions for use in electric ships. These applications require motors with high torque output at low speeds. Such requirements were the motivation for the design of a new PMSM with a novel topology. Firstly, this paper describes...
It is believed that the use of haptic sensors to measure the magnitude, direction, and distribution of a force will enable a robotic hand to perform dexterous operations. Therefore, we develop a new type of finger-shaped haptic sensor using GelForce technology. GelForce is a vision-based sensor that can be used to measure the distribution of force vectors, or surface traction fields. The simple structure...
In Japan, the current analogue terrestrial TV broadcasting service is scheduled for retirement on July 24, 2011. It was considered that the 10 MHz band on the UHF band from 715 to 725 MHz band would be used for the use of ITS. This paper summarizes the latest research and development results on IV communication systems on UHF band regarding use case, PHY and MAC layers and a prototype.
Nowadays, certain kinds of robots have been developed to be used in proximity to daily human activities. Backdriveability is important for robots to act according to users' movements. We want to develop a linear actuator of high power and backdriveability. In this study we aim to achieve high generative force and backdriveability with a novel linear actuator, because there are many straight line operations...
In this study, we propose a novel grip-type haptic display for controlling a virtual (or robotic) hand (Fig. 1). This grip-type haptic display enables us to control a virtual hand and perceive haptic information based on a reactive force and a spatially distributed tactile feedback. Because this proposed display does not need any actuators to produce the reactive force, a simple haptic display is...
Pose recognition is important in many practical applications. For example, a driver assistance system can detect if the driver is tired, sleepy, or careless from the poses. A pet robot can detect certain behavior patterns of the human user. The main purpose of this study is to develop a driver assistance system that can protect the drivers from careless accidents. As the first step, we propose a system...
