Recent years have witnessed the broad use of carbon electrodes for electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) because of large surface area, high porosity and low cost. Whereas experimental investigations are mostly focused on the device performance, computational studies have been rarely concerned with electrochemical properties at conditions remote from equilibrium, limiting their direct applications...
Hard-sphere-templating method has been widely used to synthesize hollow carbon spheres (HCSs), in which the spheres were firstly coated with a carbon precursor, followed by carbonization and core removal. The obtained HCSs are generally amorphous or weakly graphitized (with the help of graphitization catalysts). In this work, we report on the fabrication of graphitized HCSs and yolk–shell Au@HCS nanostructures...
Ultrahigh surface area carbons (USACs, e.g., >2000m2/g) are attracting tremendous attention due to their outstanding performance in energy-related applications. The state-of-art approaches to USACs involve templating or activation methods and all these techniques show certain drawbacks. In this work, a series of USACs with specific surface areas up to 3633m2/g were prepared in two steps: hydrothermal...
The molecular-scale dynamic properties of the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, or [C4mim+][Tf2N−], confined in hierarchical microporous–mesoporous carbon, were investigated using neutron spin echo (NSE) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Both NSE and MD reveal pronounced slowing of the overall collective dynamics, including the...
A novel poly(ionic liquid) which can be used as a carbon precursor was synthesized using a one-pot reaction using 1,2-dimethylimidazole and epichlorohydrin as starting materials. The unique features of this poly(ionic liquid) include: no additional initiator is required; anions can be metathesized to regulate the micropore size of the carbonaceous materials. Carbonaceous materials derived from the...
In this work, we examine the use of the amidoxime functional group grafted onto a hierarchical porous carbon framework for the selective capture and removal of carbon dioxide from combustion streams. Measured CO 2 /N 2 ideal selectivity values for the amidoxime-grafted carbon were significantly higher than the pristine porous carbon with improvements of 65%. Though the overall CO ...
We demonstrate that large scale high quality graphene synthesis can be performed using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on Cu and illustrate how this procedure eliminates major difficulties associated with the low pressure CVD approach while allowing straightforward expansion of this technology to the roll-to-roll industrial scale graphene production. The detailed recipes evaluating...
Graphitic mesoporous carbon (GMC), prepared through high-temperature graphitization of soft-templated amorphous mesoporous carbon (AMC), was used as the support for Mn, Li, and Fe triple-promoted Rh catalysts for CO hydrogenation to ethanol. The use of GMC results in C 2 H 5 OH selectivity and formation rate comparable to nonporous SiO 2 support along with a significant inhibition...
The buckling and fracture modes of thick (diameter >20nm) multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) under compressive stress were examined using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The overall dynamic deformation processes of the MWCNTs as well as the force/distance curves can be obtained. The buckling behavior of MWCNTs under compression falls into two categories, the first is non-axial buckling...
A mesoporous carbon has been synthesized by an ionothermal carbonization of glucose or fructose at low temperature under ambient pressure. The success of this ionothermal approach was based on the suppressed solvent volatility and latent acidity of a protic ionic liquid. The carbonaceous material obtained can be applied to conformal carbon coatings and carbon composite fabrications.
Flat-sheet mesoporous carbon membranes with uniform pore size (e.g., 6.4nm) and controllable thickness were prepared by pyrolysis of polymeric composite films, which were formed by self-assembly of phenolic resin and block copolymer under acidic conditions. Hexamethylenetetramine was selected as a solid cross-linker to control the rheology of polymeric carbon precursors so that the flat-sheet polymeric...
Mesoporous carbons synthesized by the film-type replication of colloidal silica and SBA-15 templates are studied by electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption. This synthesis strategy involves the formation of thin carbon film on the pore walls of these templates using resorcinol–crotonaldehyde polymer as carbon precursor. For the silica templates consisting of 20–80nm colloids this synthesis affords...
A novel carbon with vesicular, hierarchical structure was synthesized via a direct, micelle templating strategy. This vesicular carbon exhibits a wormlike morphology, very thin shells (5-30 nm) and mesopores of 2-4 nm within the shell that are perpendicular to the walls of the carbon vesicles. The structure of this novel vesicular carbon was verified by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy.
