Momentum distributions of triply up to 7-fold ionized neon and argon produced in intense (up to 20 PW/cm2) few-cycle laser pulses have been measured. The results reveal different ionization mechanisms are active depending on the target atom.
An extended Ti:sapphire oscillator produces pulses with 0.5 muJ energy at a repetition rate of 6 MHz. Tight focusing results in peak intensities reaching 1014W/cm2. We can demonstrate ionization of argon (11 photon-process).
