This paper presents a new design of 2D median filter. The filter implements a simple conditional filtering technique that executes fewer computations than related formulations while achieving superior image quality. Experimental FPGA implementations of the proposed filtering scheme for window sizes of (3×3) and (5×5) are very compact, fast and consume low-power.
Impulse noise removal is a very important preprocessing operation in many computer vision applications. This paper presents a noise removal approach based on a simple conditional technique. As evaluations show, the presented technique performs significantly better than standard median filter and achieves superior image quality. Experimental FPGA implementation of the proposed technique for window...
This paper reports real-time virtual haptization of, for example, a remote object surface based on high-speed 3D shape measurement. With this system, the operator feels sense of touch as if tracing the surface of an object. We use a high-speed projector-camera system to achieve high-speed measurement of the object surface so that high-frequency haptic feedback is maintained at a haptic device PHANToM...
This paper introduces a prototype hardware design for detecting user's presence in front of computer-based video camera. The hardware implements basic image processing techniques (filtering, color-based segmentation, thresholding) producing a signal when a human-skin color segment is detected in the image frame. Experiments show that the design allows real-time user monitoring (30 fps) with 82% detection...
As advent of communication network and multimedia processing technologies, various video conference systems to smoothly communicate each other between remote sites using with high quality audio and video have been developed. However, since those video conference systems usually use conventional cameras which only capture the objective images in one direction with narrow area, wide area such as 360...
This paper describes a new reconfigurable processor architecture specialized for high frame rate visual processing. This architecture employs a 2-D mesh processing element (PE) array in which the PEs can be configured to operate as SIMD arrays or operation-pipeline trees depending on image processing algorithms so that maximum on-chip memory consumption is reduced. To achieve high on-chip memory utilization,...
This paper proposes a high frame rate 3-D shape measurement system based on structured light projection using temporally-coded binary patterns. This system consists of a DMD (digital micromirror device) projector and a high-speed camera, both of which operate at over 6,000 fps. Introducing an image processing algorithm of detecting and tracking the projected light patterns enables frame-by-frame 3-D...
A 1,000-jps camera-projector system in which projected patterns are adoptively controlled according to image processing results is described. Adaptive structured light projection enables fast and efficient 3-D information acquisition. The prototype system is applied to the tracking of the nearest point of an object, and experimental results show that the system successfully tracked an apex of a fast-moving...
