We investigate in detail for the first time the scattering properties and heating characteristics in an optical fiber when a bubble train forms in the middle of the fiber as a result of the fiber fuse phenomenon that occurs when a high power signal is launched into the fiber. We found that almost all the optical light is scattered at the top of the bubble train. The scattered light heats UV coated...
A new type of digital filter for removing impulsive noise from color images is proposed using interactive evolutionary computing. This filter is realized as a rule-based system with interpolation technique considering the correlation among color components. This filter first detects the pixels on which impulsive noise is added on each RGB channel, based on the rules concerning the peculiarity of the...
A method of detecting text regions in images which combines grayscale decomposition and stroke extraction is proposed. By checking the consistency of the two text features, text-like connected components are grouped together to generate text line regions in the processed image. It shows good performance on efficiently detecting image text rendered in relatively complex backgrounds.
Lightpath reconfiguration management system has been designed and implemented for IP-over-CWDM networks with ROADMs. The system can search possible lightpaths made by ROADMs with specified switch states. The function is based on an equivalent graph method proposed for representing the ROADMs, and can output lightpaths in the network together with the total loss values. The system enables the network...
A novel fiber jacket removing system by a CO2 laser has been proposed to realize compact packaging of optical components. The experimental results are shown for excess-fiber-free connector mounting.
An efficient system has been implemented and tested to collect small data over optical IP networks. The results clarified that the system accumulated small data, and sent them to a center successfully.
Stackable ROADMs (S-ROADMs) have been proposed for use in regional IP-over-CWDM networks. The S-ROADM can be constructed by connecting modules with different wavelengths required in the node. The experimental results clarified that the S-ROADM could mux and demux the wavelengths successfully, and gave no limit to the passing-through wavelengths, making the network be wavelength transparent. Contrary...
Caption detection in the video is an active research topic in recent years. In the conventional methods, one of most difficult problems is to effectively and quickly extract the durations of the different-size captions in the complex background. To solve this problem, a novel and effective method is presented to locate and track the captions in the video. The main contributions are: (1)present a multi-scale...
A static and OSPF routing integration scheme has been proposed to use 2 types of lightpaths: i.e. point-to-point and one-by-one lightpaths in IP-over-CWDM networks. The 2 types of lightpaths cause multipaths with different routing: i.e. static and OSPF routings, and therefore, a suitable scheme is necessary to assure that packets are routed by the shortest route, even if the routings are different...
A data collection system has been proposed to collect small data effectively such that the total traffic is decreased by sharing the packet header. The system functions were designed to make the system work effectively for the case to collect student IDs in universities to check if students enter the classroom on time. The designed functions were implemented, and the performance was examined in an...
The spatial power spectrum of fluctuations along a highly-birefringent holey fiber is evaluated using a quasi-heterodyne interferometer. Statistical data on the nature of power spectrum for polarization-mode coupling is presented.

Lightpath reconfiguration performance has been evaluated experimentally for regional IP-over-WDM network applications, making the network scalable and stable when traffic changes occur. The reconfiguration performance was examined in an experimental network with reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (R-OADMs) to connect 4 nodes with bi-directional dual-fibers. The experiment was conducted by...
A Web-based design and control system has been investigated for regional optical IP (Internet protocol) networks. The system can design lightpaths connecting nodes such that given traffic is groomed with minimum number of wavelengths, or give a reserve design with additional lightpaths to groom future traffic. Reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (R-OADMs) were also investigated and manufactured...
The fabrication processes in air of semiconducting bismuth-and sodium-modified barium titanate, Ba1-x(Bi1/2Na1/2)xTiO3 (BBNT100x) ceramics were investigated for a lead-free PTC (positive temperature coefficient of resistivity) thermistor material usable over 130degC. The two processes and their electric properties are described. The Nb-doped BBNT6 ceramics and BBNT6 ones sintered with the oxygen-containing...
The electric properties of bismuth-and sodium-modified barium titanate, Ba1-x(Bi1/2Na1/2)xTiO3 (BBNT) were studied as a lead-free PTC (positive temperature coefficient of resistivity) thermistor material usable over 130degC. Two semiconductorization processes and their electric properties are described. Lanthanum(La)-doped BBNT ceramics sintered in air still show dielectric behaviors, but Nb-doped...
We have proposed a fully-native Ethernet (FNE) optical ring, integrating one-by-one (O-O) and point-to-point (P2P) links for customer-owned networks. A case study to design the proposed FNE ring clarified that required number of optical transceivers in the FNE ring is less than that in P2P links, providing a cost-effective solution. The experimental network of the FNE optical ring was constructed...
