This paper introduces the investigation of high performance Nickel-Oxide cathode for high powerw with long pulse. The authors also discuss the key factors affecting the performance of cathode, including the cathode surface, porosity of Nickel matrix, and distribution of temperature, etc. the authors employ the special mould to change the density and roughness of cathode surface. Finally, the magnetron...
This paper describes the experiments for the evaporation and film degradation of osmium-coated cathode. Evaporating rate and under-heated characters were tested, and SEM & EDS were used. Barium evaporation is the main factor of cathode life degradation under 1080 C. The model of failure caused by evaporation was established.
Linear induction accelerators(LIAs) require the electron sources that can deliver high current strength and have good brightness for the beam quality. The paper mainly introduces the application of the thermionic cathodes including “M” type and scandate cathodes in LIAs that have been used VEDs and the key points of the fabrication of the cathode assemblies.
This paper will present the more detail on the life experiment and discuss the M-type cathode life characteristic and operating fundamentals. The authors also give some advices for extending cathode life.
This paper describes the life-test vehicles and evaluation results of M cathodes. BVERI evaluated the M cathodes lifetime in 40 diodes and 18 electron guns (including 2 TWTs) in DC mode under the conditions of temperature acceleration and current density acceleration, and presented the preliminary life model of M type cathode. The diameter of the cathodes used in the experiments is 2.0 mm. The average...
Both kinds of 10 cm diameter thermionic dispenser cathode have been fabricated at BVERI. One is impregnated scandate (I-Sc) cathode and the other is traditional Ir-coated “M” cathode with 411 impregnant. Figure 1 is the photograph of Φ10 cm cathode assembly. The scandate cathode can deliver the same density as “M” cathode but 80-100°C lower in temperature, though it needs higher vacuum than “M” cathode...
The new hollow cathode assemblies (HCAs) based on a tungsten matrix impregnated with barium calcium aluminates have been developed at BVERI. The assembly heater and advanced brazing technique are adopted to improve the compatibility of thermal and mechanical structure, as well as reliability and lifetime. The HCA are designed to deliver currents up to 5A for ion thruster or Hall thruster. This paper...
