We demonstrate a 3.4-pJ/bit CMOS-driven VCSEL link incorporating latched half-rate inputs and outputs operating error-free at 28 Gb/s over a few meters of multimode fiber.
Two optical links sharing a TX but using different RXs explore the speed/power/area tradeoff. Circuits are 90nm CMOS. Record full-link power efficiencies of 1.37pJ/bit at 15Gb/s and 3.6pJ/bit at 25Gb/s are achieved.
Receiver based on Ge waveguide PD hybrid-integrated with CMOS amplifier shows an unprecedented data rate of 20Gbps, −7.1dBm sensitivity, and 7pJ/bit power efficiency. Further improvement is obtained with avalanche gain and feed-forward equalization.
Multimode optical transmitters and receivers are demonstrated with record low power consumptions and at data rates up to 20 Gb/s using 90-nm CMOS analog integrated circuits and GaAs-based VCSELs and photodiodes.
