The reuse of existing infrastructure whilst keeping unaffected the legacy equipment is a crucial feature for the evolution of gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs) towards higher capacity wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical networks (WDM-PONs). In this paper a testbed for the evaluation of simple and cost effective GPON evolutions will be presented. A comprehensive set of WDM-PON architectures...
A colorless performance-improved WDM-PON compatible with Gigabit-PON is presented. The proposed solution is based on a Service-ONU for multiwavelength distribution. Mitigation of Rayleigh backscattering effect and path-loss degradation is demonstrated in 2.5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s schemes.
A bidirectional WDM-PON exploiting reflective semiconductor amplifiers at the optical network unit (ONU) and a multiwavelength RZ pulsed signal comb at the Central Office (CO) is presented. The reflective SOA acts simultaneously as downstream modulation eraser, upstream amplifier and modulator, thus making the ONU wavelength-independent.
