The reflection properties of porcine skin are examined in the terahertz (THz) frequency range utilizing a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer with a reflection unit. Their dependence on the frequency and other parameters such as the surface structure is analyzed in order to determine whether porcine skin can be used as surrogate for human skin in the THz frequency range.
In synchrotron radiation sources short pulses of coherent THz radiation is emitted when the length of electron bunches becomes sufficiently small. A detector system based on a superconducting NbN ultra-fast bolometer with an intrinsic response time of about 100 ps was jointly developed by the University of Karlsruhe (Institute of Micro- and Nanoelectronic Systems) and German Aerospace Center (Berlin)...
We report on progress towards a solid state 2.5-THz heterodyne receiver. The front-end of the receiver is integrated in a pulse tube cooler. It consists of a quantum cascade laser (QCL) as local oscillator and a phonon-cooled NbN hot electron bolometric mixer. The QCL is mounted on the first stage of the PTC and operates at a temperature of about 45 K while the HEB is mounted on the second stage of...
Various applications in astronomy and security need highly sensitive heterodyne receiver with a quantum cascade laser or a gas laser as local oscillator and a quasioptically coupled hot-electron bolometer mixer. Here we report on the development and characterization of the receiver components for frequencies up to 2.5 THz.
Detection of concealed threats at large distances is a key issue in public security. The paper describes a 0.8-THz radar that is capable to indicate hidden objects at a distance of more than 20 meter with a spatial resolution of less than 1 cm. The radar scans the scene with a narrow terahertz beam and uses heterodyne receiver with a hot-electron bolometer mixer. With integration time of 0.3 sec the...
