Highly ordered porous films of cellulose-based graft copolymers were prepared by the breath figure method upon solvent evaporation. The morphology of the microporous films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atom force microscopy (AFM). The influences of the preparing conditions, the length and the type of the side chains of copolymers on the morphology of the porous films were...
Amphiphilic ethyl cellulose (EC)-g-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Firstly, ethyl cellulose macro-initiators with the degree of the 2-bromoisobutyryl substitution of 0.04 and 0.25 synthesized by the esterification of the hydroxyl groups remained in EC macromolecular chains and the 2-bromoisobutyryl bromides. Secondly, tert-butyl...
Copolymer ethylene-dimethyl-aminoethyl methacrylate (EDAM) with 3.9% DAM side groups and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were blended in decalin solvent. The hot homogenized solution was poured into an aluminum tray to form gels and the decalin was allowed to evaporate from the resultant gels under ambient condition. Surprisingly, the resultant dry blend films could be elongated...
Relaxation processes of several kinds of polyethylene films and fibers with different molecular orientational degrees and crystallinities were extensively investigated by the dynamic mechanical relaxation, positron annihilation and 13 C nuclear magnetic relaxation ( 13 C NMR). From complex dynamic tensile modulus, the activation energies of α 1 and α 2 relaxations were...
The gelation mechanism of agarose and κ-carrageenan aqueous solutions was investigated by using polarized light scattering and X-ray diffraction techniques in terms of the liquid-liquid phase separation. When an incident beam of He-Ne gas laser was directed to the gel prepared by quenching the agarose solution, the logarithm of scattered intensity increased linearly in the initial stage and tended...
The membrane samples of poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic-acid) (PVA/PAA) blend with different draw ratios were studied by both 13C CP/MAS NMR and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements. Phase separation induced by elongation of the sample was observed and the change of the phase structure with draw ratio was found to be dependent on the composition of the blend samples.
Greatest drawability was studied for blend films with branched low molecular weight polyethylene (B-LMWPE) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) prepared by gelation/crystallization from solutions. The morphology of B-LMWPE-UHMWPE dry gel film and its deformation mechanism were mainly estimated by using differential scanning calorimeter, small-angle X-ray scattering, wide-angle X-ray...
