Upon annealing amorphous Si/crystalline Al bilayers at 250°C for 1h, complete layer exchange has occurred. Analysis of the Gibbs energies before and after annealing has shown that the thermodynamic driving force for layer exchange increases with temperature. A kinetic criterion for layer exchange has been proposed, which is based on the diffusion length of Si along Al grain boundaries.
