A linear-to-rotary motion converter is demonstrated using 3-D SiGe/Si dual-chirality helical nanobelts (DCHNBs). Analytical and experimental investigation shows that the motion conversion has excellent linearity for small deflections. The conversion ratios of displacement and load for a SiGe/Si DCHNB (an 8-nm-thick Si0.6Ge0.4 and a 10-nm-thick Si layer) are found to be 171.3deg/mum and 2.110 times...
Few rotational actuators currently exist with the ability to transmit motion at different speeds, torques, and directions at the nanometer scale. We present work regarding the application of helical nanobelts as linear-to-rotary and rotary-to-linear motion converters. We discuss their ability to rectify device rotation to linear motion for untethered microrobotic applications as well as their application...
We have described and demonstrated a rigid-body tracking system suitable for use in a Scanning Electron Microscope under a variety of conditions. This system has demonstrated an ability to work with noisy images, sub-pixel resolution at a number of magnifications and the ability to track moving targets at real-time (~10 fps) frame rates. With this automated tracking system, the mechanical properties...
In this paper, we report an in-situ nanosoldering technique to make electrically conductive interconnections between three-dimensional (3D) helical micro-/nanostructures and electrodes for the nanorobotic assembly of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) using gold nanoparticle ink. 3D helical nanobelts are placed onto pre-fabricated gold electrodes using nanorobotic manipulation inside a scanning...
Robotics continues to provide researchers with an increasing ability to interact with objects at the nano scale. As micro- and nanorobotic technologies mature, more interest is given to computer-assisted or automated approaches to manipulation at these scales. Although actuators are currently available that enable displacements resolutions in the subnanometer range, improvements in feedback technologies...
