This survey paper presents some of the applications where the versatile time-lens concept successfully can be applied to ultra-high-speed serial systems by offering expected needed functionalities for future optical communication networks.
We have demonstrated 160 Gb/s all-optical data modulation with an extinction ratio of 18.5 dB based on XPM in a silicon nanowire. Error free performance is achieved for the optically modulated 160 Gb/s signal.
The linewidth of an improved 40 GHz modelocked laser diode is investigated. The influence of its operation parameters on linewidth and the resulting performance in a 40Gband-DQPSK system is evaluated.
Petawatt solid-state lasers require meter-sized gratings to limit fluences. Smaller, coherently added gratings may be used alternatively. Alignment tolerances and experimental data are presented for two gratings using monochromatic light. Designs for broadband pulse compressions are discussed.
